A Retrospective View of Black Men In America by Denise D. McAdory Ph.D
It is imperative that critical thinking occur as a result of viewing the CNN Special entitled “Black in America”, before it is too late to change the path of many young Black males. Critical thinking is the process of carefully attending to spoken or written information to evaluate its validity. Thus, if Black males are taught about choices to ascertain opportunities, then as a community we have work to do if they are to learn how to think critically. Additionally, what was most revealing in the segment that focused on Black men is choices are available; but to my dismay, many are unaware due to their neighborhoods and limited access to resources. If young Black males are unaware of the resources or if family support is limited, how are they to know that resources are available?
Unfortunately, due to the lack of knowledge concerning the availability of resources, sub-cultures have developed within the Black culture. Consequently, within the Black culture lives several subcultures based primarily on economics and education. The “veil” that separates the various cultures can be penetrated, but for that to occur assistance from the community is needed and positive school teachers are tantamount.
(Columbus) Mayor Michael B. Coleman today issued the following statement upon hearing of the death of Cleveland Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
“I'm deeply saddened by the loss of my friend Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Ohio's Congresswoman. She was a great leader of the Democratic Party, the City of Cleveland, our state and our nation. I will miss debating with her and laughing with her. My prayers and sympathy go out to her family.”
